Despite the setback caused by Prohibition, America has recently begun to reestablish the strong brewing heritage originally built by early British settlers, and later 19th century immigrants. The present growth of craft brewing presents the consumer with a confusing array of beer styles. This course, taught as a series of three separate lectures, will help you understand these styles and their origins. So whether you aspire to quaff a pint in a British pub, say Prosit! in a Bavarian beer hall, savor the complexity of a Belgian Trappist ale, or simply order with confidence in one of America's ever increasing number of brewpubs, Jay Hersh, aka Dr. Beer(SM), can teach you what you need to know.

British Beer Night covers the origins of the many ale styles found at so many of America's new brewpubs and microbreweries, and includes a tasting of approximately a dozen different beer styles originating in the United Kingdom. Sep. 19 7pm

German Beer Night covers the origins of lager beer (among other native styles) and includes a tasting of approximately a dozen different beer styles originating in several regions of Germany (especially Bavaria) and the neighboring Czech Republic. Sep. 26 7pm

Belgian Beer Night covers the unique approach of Belgian brewers who marry the craftsmanship of their German neighbors with the artistry of their French neighbors to create a range of beer styles unique to this small country. A taste of approximately a dozen different unique beers is offered. Oct. 3 7pm

Upcoming courses at Boston Ctr for Adult Education 267-4430 Sep. 27 7pm and Cambridge Ctr for Adult Education Nov.21 6pm
